A Compromise for AOL Radio

I would register and use AOM Record in a heartbeat if they could resolve the XM Radio via AOL issue.  There are a few XM channels (Sunny is an example) which have distinct pauses between selections.  Having AOM Record recognize those pauses as a track break, and writing out the file with the track information that it does pick up, generally correctly, would make this a workable product for some channels.

Nobody should expect easy track splitting on crossfading music channels - it's just never going to happen.  But for a handful of channels, AOM Record could be a useful product immediately.

Thomas

wny,

Please use a real name!

Could you please mention some more of the XM channels that have destinct pauses between the songs?

Thanks

Thomas

BTW. Have you tried PANDORA.com with AOMrecord?

Sunny would be the bext example of an XM channel with distinct pauses between each song.  It plays light music and there is a one-two second pause between each song.

I saw you provided an .ini file back in January that would ignore the default behavior of AOMrecord of waiting for songs to end before track splitting.  Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work with the current version of AOMrecord.  If it could be adapted to the current version so that tracks from XM's Sunny could be split based on pause recognition, you'd have a registered customer here.

For some reason, changing my profile with a real name doesn't take... so I'll just sign this:

That's what I just thought of to provide for the current version. BTW, the mentioned .ini file might be over a year old I guess.

But it would be nice if I could test that with some other stations than just "Sunny". So, if you know one, just tell me (I really don't have the time to try them all ;-) ).

Another channel with pauses is AudioVisions.  The classical channels also seem to incorporate pauses as well.  I'd be personally happy if I could just get Sunny to record, as I'm a light music fan.

P.S. - I have sampled Pandora, but it isn't as useful to me as most of the music there is also licensed by Yahoo! Music/Rhapsody/Virgin, etc., and I can play that music on demand, so I don't have to wait for Pandora to play something I like.  The reason I am interested in Sunny, for example, is that their music library is more often than not custom recorded for beautiful music stations (most of which have long since gone away in the United States).  Almost 75% of their playlist is not commercially available anywhere.

Let me know if you can develop and release a customized new .ini file that will split tracks based on basic audio pauses.  If I can get Sunny to record, I'll be a very happy registered customer of AOMrecord!

Thomas

All right Philip,

here we go:

Download this file: http://aomrecord.com/bin/XM/MSIE.ini and replace the file with the same name in AOMrecord's program folder (normally C:\Program Files\AOMrecord).

Before doing so please rename the original file to whatever you want to have a backup copy available.

Please let us know if this what you expected.

But remember: This patch only works if there are pauses between songs.

Best regards

Thomas

Thank you very much for doing this.  I have been testing it over the past several days and can report back that it does seem to be doing a good job of splitting the songs and handling the channel correctly.  The only times it doesn't work properly are during rare instances when Sunny segues between songs without a significant pause (which is understandable considering the need for the pause to recognize different tracks), and when the AOL Player stops working correctly.

I do not know if this is a symptom of using AOMrecord or the AOL player itself, but at random times (sometimes within minutes of starting, other times within a few hours), the AOL player suddenly starts pausing and restarting over and over again.  It acts like a rebuffering problem, but I have very fast broadband so that should not be it, and once this problem starts, it never corrects itself unless I hit the stop button on the player and restart it.

Whenever the player does this, it resets the playing time to 0:00, gets to maybe 0:01, stops, resets, and tries to start again, and so on.

Has anyone else noticed this?  It makes it very hard to set AOMrecord to just run overnight, because usually within an hour this problem occurs and the effective ability to record ends without a manual reset of the player.

In any event, I am now a registered AOLrecord user and greatly appreciate the efforts you made on my behalf.

Hi Philip,

Speaking for myself I have never seen this.

Do you use the player inside the AOL client? If so, try with the player that runs without the client, inside the browser or vice versa. You can launch this player from AOMrecord (1st tab).

I am using the web based player that launches from AOMrecord.  It has been happening off an on all morning for me.

I have tried some different experiments to see if I could get it stopped to no avail thus far.

1) I tried making the processing directory to be on a different drive.  That didn't do anything.

2) I tried turning off encoding.  This created a whole new set of issues because when I tried to use the encoder program, it just deleted my .wav files altogether and didn't process any of them.  Microsoft Antispyware did come up and asked if I wanted to allow a bat file to run, to which I said yes, but that didn't do anything.  I had to undelete my files.

My suspicions are that this is some sort of problem with the stream keeping up, but it seems to only be an issue with AOMrecord is running.  I know AOMrecord is designed to restart the stream when it is stopped, and maybe this isn't working properly through the script you provided.  It is very annoying because the fault is totally unpredictable.  This afternoon it started within 20 minutes of setting the computer to record.  Some other times I can get a good hour before it starts to act up.  I'd love to get to the bottom of this.

Thomas

I'll try to reconstruct this error. But until now I haven't been able yet. I'll let you know.

Philip,

I've recorded for more than 24 hours now. No problem. Only one short interruption that appears every 24 hours when my provider cut the line. They do this here every 24 hours if you have a flat rate.

All recordings are great. I encoded to MP3 with 128 kbit. My configuration: 1.4 GHz Centrino, 512 GB, XP Professional and an incredible lot of software installed. But no viruses and/or  Trojan horses ;-).

All I can do now is to tell you to check your system. There must be something wrong with this.

I did this test just for you. Nobody else has reported something similar before. And AOMrecord has been tested on different machines running all kinds of Windows without any similar appearance.

I'm glad for myself that nothing happened, but sorry for you because I have no idea what to tell you.

Have a nice weekend!

Some potentially good news on this front - I had our cable modem replaced yesterday and so far so good with stopping this problem.

I'll test it for the next few days and see if this, was in fact, the problem all along.

On another issue, when XM cannot pass proper track information, it will send out a generic track title like XM Sunny - XM Sunny - XM Sunny.  I have inserted this into my Whitelist, but noted that AOMrecord overwrites the existing file with each instance of this appearing.

It might be useful to add an option check box on the Whitelist or under Options to -either- replace the existing file -or- -rename- the current file to something different so that the new recording doesn't replace the existing one.  It could be renamed something like XM Sunny 1.xxx XM Sunny 2.xxx, etc.

Thanks!  Phillip

I didn't know if you had seen this or not or what you thought of it....  Thanks.
